Depression is a funny thing. Or perhaps it is withdrawal, this dark feeling that washes over me every time I realize there are NO more In Treatment episodes on the horizon, no more intense encounters with Mia and April and Walter, no more sad-eyed Oliver, no more Gina/Paul fireworks.

I somehow expect it is no accident that this quote popped up in my Daily Quotes feed today:

“The whole dream of democracy is to raise the proletarian to the level of stupidity attained by the bourgeois.” —Gustave Flaubert

at the same time as this news entry:

Cable finales. HBO’s In Treatment (264,000 viewers Monday, below last year’s, despite a new block-scheduling strategy); MTV’sThe Hills (2.7 million Sunday); AMC’s Breaking Bad (1.5 million Sunday); and E!’s Keeping Up With the Kardashians (1.9 million Monday).

Sigh.

It’s a puzzle indeed.

  1. I find it so hard to beleive that a program of this utter greatness has so few viewers. I don’t think the bean counter is accurate. That or the fact people are canceling their pay cable channels to make ends meet. I would rather not buy lunch everyday to be able to afford HBO. This show is far beyond greatness. Perhaps more marketing? I have seen most of GB movies and this is his finest work to date. If this show does not return for more seasons, their goes my HBO subscription. I think a 12 step program should be started for us IT addicts.

  2. It makes perfect sense to me. If programs such as I’M A CELEBRITY, GET ME OUT OF HERE and JOHN & KATE PLUS 8 is what the majority of people in the U.S. want to watch, no wonder a brilliant, highly intelligent, and thought-provoking series such as IN TREATMENT doesn’t stand a chance!! Very, very sad. I need to start seeing a therapist who can talk me through my depression if the series is not picked up by HBO :( :(

  3. riitta, a foreign fancier

In Treatment has large international audience. This drama has been sold to TVs in a great number of countries (except UK!). I sincerely hope that HBO appreciates also the interest of the foreign fanciers on this intelligent and addictive drama. I have never enjoyed a TV drama more than this one. I have seen both seasons and can only say that the actors, especially Gabriel Byrne and Dianne Wiest, do brilliant work.

  4. June, Tina, and riitta–thanks for your comments. In Treatment was a joy this year and last year, too. We can hope for a third season, but early indications are that this may not happen. So, we can hope. Whatever Gabriel Byrne does next, I am sure it will be exciting! See? I’m not so depressed…no, not depressed at all. WAH!!! :-)
