Synopsis

Behind the Sword in the Stone is a retrospective documentary that looks back at the making of director John Boorman’s 1981 movie Excalibur. Self-described as the toughest film he ever made, Excalibur told the tale of King Arthur and the Sword in the Stone and helped start the careers of some of today’s most well-known actors.

In this film, actors Liam Neeson, Gabriel Byrne, Helen Mirren and Patrick Stewart join other cast and crew to share their memories from the filming of this Arthurian masterpiece. They recount stories starting with Boorman’s casting process which recruited them from national theaters to grueling nights spent filming the same scene many times over in order to get it just right. Though a challenging film for most of those involved, it was the catalyst for many that led to extremely successful careers.
