…ever wondered what it feels like to be most actors? You’ll know after this. –Paste Magazine

We have been waiting and waiting and now it is here! No Pay, Nudity will open in Los Angeles this Friday and will go on to screen at many theaters in the US afterwards.

After the screening in LA, there will be a Question and Answer session, with director Lee Wilkof and cast members. There is no word yet about Gabriel Byrne attending, so stay tuned!

The film participated in several festivals over the summer and received positive responses from everyone. Now that it is officially opening in the US, more reviews will follow and you will see them here, of course.

This review from Paste Magazine is full of praise for the film, its story, the acting, and the tone it achieves. I loved the first two paragraphs so much I decided to include them here, but be sure to read the entire review. Glowing!

Pretty much all “creative” people, get The Talk at some point. From a teacher. A mentor. An older friend. Our parents. All of the above. The Talk is about how, no matter how much you love it, trying to make a living as an actor, a musician—a writer—will devour you like something out of HP Lovecraft and you should run screaming while you still have the ability to run, because your knees will wear out from all the time you spend on them, begging, or—you know. Usually there is a line in there to the effect of “If you can think of one single thing you could be happy doing—one single other thing—for God’s sake do that.”

In No Pay, Nudity, Lester Rosenthal (played superbly by the incomparable Gabriel Byrne) is an actor who was told that, once. He didn’t listen. He joined the tenacious ranks of the asbestos-coated souls who don’t care what it costs them, the people who either have incredibly fracture-proof patellas or we seriously, truly, for reals couldn’t imagine ourselves being happy doing anything else. The epic asshole that is Art in a Capitalist Economy? It not only doesn’t give a shit about your talent. It has no respect for your loyalty or devotion or work ethic, and it lets you have the full blast of its fickleness, cruelty, terrifying financial instability and ego-crushing indifference. Over and over.

And: The Trailer!

Are you excited to see No Pay, Nudity? How about Gabriel Byrne in a comedy? This is going to be FUN! heart

WOW!! I love this “played superbly by the incomparable Gabriel Byrne”.

I wonder why the people who give the prizes don’t see this. Are they blind?

But not only for this job, that I am sure will be fantastic, but for every job that Gabriel did, including “Long Day’s Journey into Night”.

I hope the day will come when his talent will be recognized as he deserves!

    • We all wonder why he does not receive the recognition we think he deserves, Verónica! We certainly recognize him! <3

To be honest, though, I am just glad he is still out there, making movies, appearing in plays, working in television--we get to see him in all kinds of roles and enjoy his work and his commitment to his craft.

Someday he will win something big. Or not. We love him, no matter what. Right? ;-)

Sure we love him and I hope too he will win something big, very big, bigger than the Empire State.
Well I would be happy if he wins an Oscar ! :-D

    • It might happen. I can’t cross my fingers for it, though, because then I can’t type! :-)

In the meantime, he has been getting wonderful reviews–for the play, for Louder Than Bombs–and that is a great thing!

    Hi Dora :-)

Here it is what I think about why he has not the recognition what he deserves.
He is “out” of Hollywood. He does not fit there. He is humble, many times low-profiled, all things what the “big” stars of Hollywood are not.
He works lately on independent movies and those don’t are related to Hollywood.
I think they don’t forgive him for being personal and different and over all for conserve his nationality.
All the news you can read here, belongs exclusively to Stella :-)

    • Dora and Verónica,

Yes, he is not part of the Hollywood machine. And this limits the recognition he will receive from that “machine.” But Gabriel Byrne gets plenty of recognition from critics, fans, and other artists. The past few years have been full of positive responses to his work from these folks. More importantly, though, he has chosen to work on projects that are meaningful to him (except maybe Vampire Academy :-)) and I think he is an excellent role model for choosing to do what you want to do and HANG the rest. He is in a lucky position, to be able to do this, but he made his own luck. We can all learn from his example, I think.

    Stella,

Of course you are right and you know more than us about that “machine”.
But, do you know what happen? Besides Gabriel is recognized by many people, “World” is used to a plenty recognition to an actor when he/she wins a known prize and more if wins the maximum: the “Oscar”, and I repeat: the “World”, the big majority, although the actor or actress don’t have comparison with, in this case, Gabriel. But someday, when the big judges of Hollywood will wake up, justice will exist.

Thanks Stella. I mean it. <3
