I missed this at the time, but here is the great news! No Pay, Nudity won the Special Jury Prize: Achievement in Filmmaking at the Stony Brook Film Festival! Posted at the No Pay, Nudity Facebook Page, which I think is maintained by Lee Wilkof, the film’s director, here is the proof:

Updated July 24

In the run up to the premiere of No Pay, Nudity at the Stony Brook Film Festival on July 26, we have an article from Playbill, screencaps from the trailer, a behind-the-scenes look posted on Instagram, and a new promo shot from Brian Lannin, the film’s cinematographer. And don’t forget to watch (or re-watch!) the trailer. This looks like a lovely and sometimes acerbic comedy, with wonderful performances from everyone and the added excitement of Gabriel Byrne in a leading romantic/comedic role, something we do not see every day!

Playbill: How Broadway Stars Came Together for a Film About “Shattered Dreams” [This article is no longer available on the Internet]

“It’s a movie about shattered dreams,” says Lane. “How do people cope—people who don’t become successful, people who are still struggling at age 50 or 60 and still hanging in there in hopes of something or just to be able to do it, to be a part of it.” No Pay, Nudity is also a story of recovery, re-discovery, love and friendship—the type of friendship that is more family than anything else.

“The characters in this movie, that core group of ne’er-do-wells, is a family unit,” says Gaines. “They love each other; they’re also jealous; they push each other’s buttons, but they still love each other. Their own immediate families have been superseded by this social family.”

In fact, old friendships define this cast in real life. Byrne and Lane were seen in Carrie Pilby together. Lane has known Conroy for years. Conroy attended Juilliard with Gaines and starred opposite him in The Tempest at the Guthrie not long after their graduation. Donna Murphy, a supporting role in the film, knows Wilkof from their Little Shop days when she was the vacation cover for Audrey.

As becomes clear in the movie, what has kept them sane through all the struggle is strong relationships.

On a personal note: I loved Frances Conroy so much in Six Feet Under. I know she has a big following now for her roles in American Horror Story and she has done so much great work in film and television since her Six Feet Under days, but I am going to take advantage of my HBO GO and watch her as Ruth in all 63 episodes of that amazing series. Well, I will watch some of them, anyway! wink

July 11

Making its world premiere at the Stony Brook Film Festival in New York State on July 26, No Pay, Nudity is a film we have been anticipating for a long time!

Starring Gabriel Byrne, Nathan Lane, Frances Conroy, Boyd Gaines, and Donna Murphy, the film is the directorial debut of Lee Wilkof, a well-known film and stage actor.

Mr. Wilkof will probably hate me for reminding you that he originated the role of Seymour Krelborne in Little Shop of Horrors on Broadway in 1983. wink

Since then he has done tons of film and television, as well as stage roles. His first feature film, written by Ethan Sandler, is the story of an actor, played by Gabriel, who is having a very bad day, it seems, although there does appear to be a light at the end of the tunnel for him.

Synopsis:

A film about about hanging out, hanging in, and hanging on. Gabriel Byrne, playing comically against type, portrays aging actor Lester Rosenthal, a man who has lost his way with his career, his family, and his friends. A hilarious Nathan Lane, along with Frances Conroy and Boyd Gaines, portray his fellow thespians, all waiting for the right role to come along as they hang out in the Actors Equity lobby.

Check out the trailer in the posting header above and stay tuned for more news as it happens!

I cannot wait to see it. I love seeing this in the paper, so funny. I have no doubt he is a great comedian. Also wish this would show in Argentina soon. Once again, he is a wonderful actor that we all love. Thanks!

  4. I really like Dora’s sentence: ” He is a wonderful actor that we all love”

In fact: I love (!) that sentence!
