Official Press Release

JOHN FORD: DREAMING THE QUIET MAN RELEASED IN CINEMAS ON JUNE 15th

As one of Hollywood’s most iconic directors, John Ford gave the world of cinema over 100 films, but THE QUIET MAN in particular moved the Irish nation in an extraordinary way.

JOHN FORD: DREAMING THE QUIET MAN is a touching documentary that explores the making of the Oscar-winning film which took twenty years of Ford’s life to bring to the big screen. The film features heartfelt discussions with Maureen O’Hara, Peter Bogdanovich, Martin Scorsese and Jim Sheridan alongside narration by Gabriel Byrne and original home-movie footage of the cast and crew’s time in Ashford Castle. JOHN FORD: DREAMING THE QUIET MAN recounts stories from the people who still remember how Hollywood came to the West of Ireland and changed their lives forever.

Speaking about the film, Director Sé Merry Doyle comments that ‘it’s always a privilege to make a film but to make one about John Ford and The Quiet Man is a milestone in my career and I’m delighted that Irish audiences will get the chance to see this film on the big screen where it belongs.’

After the Irish cinema release on June 15th, the film will be released in Ireland on video on demand (www.volta.ie) and DVD on June 29th. The DVD will be available in the UK from July 9th and there will be cinema screenings throughout the US during the summer (dates yet to be announced).

I bought this; it came from Ireland of course – my dvd players are not compatible Why – and why didn’t they tell me before taking my 25 us dollars?

  2. Yikes, me too! bought it 3 weeks ago as a birthday present for my Dad and he e-mailed me last night that it is not working. any suggestions?

  3. Sorry to hear you are having problems with the DVD. Some options:

    1. Return the Region 2 DVD and wait for the Region 1 DVD (USA) to be released. This may or may not happen, of course. No idea right now.

    2. Purchase a “region-free” DVD player. These are fairly inexpensive and could be worth it if you purchase Region 2 DVDs from the UK and Europe and want to be able to play them. Search Amazon and you will see some examples of these players.

    3. There may be a way to “tweak” your current DVD player and make it “region-free.” You can search on the Internet and see if the make/model of your DVD player is capable of being tweaked and, if it is, then you can follow the directions and tweak it.

    Hope this helps!
