Marco Polo, the Netflix series that follows the story of the Italian explorer who lived at the court of Kublai Khan in Mongolia during the 13th century, has a stellar cast, great visuals, and a compelling story-line. Season 1 was 10 episodes of  intriguing characters, stunning scenery, and beautifully choreographed battles. We can’t wait for Season 2, which begins Friday, July 1.

And now, thanks to Netflix UK and Ireland, we have a behind-the-scenes featurette for Season 2 of Marco Polo!

Gabriel Byrne appears as Pope Gregory X and also as himself at 1:38 – 1:55 of this video and he has this to say about Netflix:

An interesting change has happened in the last few years in terms of film and television. More people are watching Netflix than are going to see independent films.

A MONTH AGO I HAVE BEEN SUBSCRIBE IN NETFLIX, AFTER YOU SAID THAT THE NEW SERIES MARCO POLO HAD GABRIEL IN THE SECOND PART OF IT LIKE GREGORIO X. I AM VERY HAPPY FOR THAT AND WE CAN ENJOY MR BYRNE IN A NEW MOVIE AGAIN. THANKS FOR ALL THIS INFORMATION. MY BEST WISHES FOR ALL YOU.

  2. Watched Season 1 and hugely enjoyed the beautiful cinematography and compelling drama of this unique series. What an excellent cast, especially Benedict Wong and Tom Wu. Season 2 adds more powerhouses like Gabriel and Michelle Yeoh.

BTW do I detect a little irony in that smile, Pope Gregory ? This I have to see.

  3. I am not so sure I will like this series. I saw the trailer here and it looks like it is a lot of action, fancy costumes and violence here. Sorry to say that but I have to be honest. But I hope that new people can discover that Gabriel Byrne is a great actor through his role here.

(Hope not too many Byrenholics will be angry at me now.)

    • Nora, many of us are not “action movie” fans, I think.

However! This series is more complicated than that. Political intrigue, complications with family members, and other dramatic interactions are really the focus of the show, balanced out by gorgeous scenery and the occasional AMAZINGLY choreographed fight sequence.

Decider.com is a place I visit sometimes to learn more about the shows that are coming out on streaming and cable services. They have a nice article about Marco Polo Season 2 that you might want to read (caution: some nudity in this article, but she is moving so fast you really don’t see much!):

Benedict Wong, Joan Chen, and Michelle Yeoh are legends. And they are great in Marco Polo. The rest of the cast is very good, too. And Gabriel’s Pope is wonderful, of course.

Give it a try. Or not. It’s okay. I love that Mr. Byrne decided to take on this challenge. He likes to surprise us now and then, doesn’t he? <3
