We have our new Paul. And it is not Gabriel Byrne.

Before you throw up your hands and turn away, please know that the new “Paul” will be portrayed by an amazing actor, Uzo Aduba, and her presence as the new therapist in Season 4 of In Treatment opens up all kinds of intriguing possibilities for stories, themes, characters, and emotions.

And emotion is what this series is all about, right?

Uzo Aduba

I first became aware of Uzo Aduba in the Netflix series Orange is the New Black. She was outstanding as the strange, mercurial, sometimes frightening, sometimes childlike Suzanne, or “Crazy Eyes,” as the other characters in the series sometimes called her. Uzo commanded the screen, no matter what mood Suzanne happened to be experiencing, and she made that unpredictable woman come alive for us. I’ll never forget her. Laughter and tears, in equal measure. Uzo won two Emmy awards for her work in Orange is the New Black. She has also appeared in several other television and film projects, most notably as Shirley Chisholm, in the 2020 Hulu mini-series Mrs. America, with Cate Blanchett and Sarah Paulson, for which she won another Emmy!

Her new role as Dr. Brooke Lawrence reminds us that the first series of In Treatment was an inclusive story line. We saw patients who were black, gay, from other cultures and countries, as well as women, children, young people, aging people, and more. The core of the story remained traditional–a white male with a string of degrees and years of experience. It was also nontraditional, though, because that guy had a truckload of empathy. So, it will be intriguing to see the role of therapist taken on by Uzo Aduba, a move that is bound to please Gabriel Byrne, who, as Byrneholic Angelle observes, has always been an ally supporting “intersectionality and empowerment in this new decade of a global anti-racist movement.”

How will the writers capture The Time of the Pandemic? And how will this production overcome the challenges of creating content while the virus rages throughout the United States? We must stay tuned for answers!

Read more about the casting of Uzo Aduba in the reboot of In Treatment at Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, which notes:

Aduba will star as the therapist at the center of the season, Dr. Brooke Lawrence. (Additional castings will be announced at a later date.) The re-imagined fourth season will bring a diverse trio of patients in session with the observant, empathetic Lawrence while she wrestles with her own issues in this half-hour drama series.

This sounds good to me. What about you?

And what if Gabriel appeared in a guest spot? Has anyone thought of that!?

I can’t give you an answer unless you call me. smile

Remember Paul?

Deadline has the scoop:

HBO’s In Treatment is officially back in session and, along with TBS’ Daniel Radcliffe-fronted Miracle Workers, is coming to California thanks to some generous tax credits from the state.

There are no definite details on whether Gabriel Byrne will be returning as psychotherapist Paul Weston in the premium cabler drama that first ran from 2008-2010. However, after rumblings of possibly more of the Rodrigo García-shepherded series started last month, we do know there will be a Season 4 of In Treatment and it will receive just more than $6 million in tax incentives from the Golden State.

“We are very grateful for the relocation incentive and the opportunity to base more production in California,” said HBO’s Janet Graham Borba on Monday of the move of the once NYC-based In Treatment out west in its latest incarnation. “The state’s ongoing efforts to promote film and TV production have a very significant impact,” the Production EVP added. In point of fact, this latest move by In Treatment is a homecoming of sorts; based on an Israeli format, Be Tipul, created by The Affair’s Hagai Levi, In Treatment’s first season was actually filmed in Los Angeles but the show relocated to New York upon the insistence of the Gotham-based Byrne. . .

Likely much more able to accommodate the restrictions of projected COVID-19 safety protocols due to its therapy-situated settings and spotlight on core characters, the new version of In Treatment will hire eight cast members for its Cali-based fourth season . . .

What? They want to do it again? I don’t know–maybe… What do YOU think?

At this time, there is no word on who might write and direct this new show, nor is there any inkling about who might act in it. Speculation runs rampant on Twitter, of course (“A reboot of In Treatment!? Heck, yes!”), and the great thing to note there is that EVERYONE seems enthusiastic and willing to entertain this idea!

Warren Leight was the showrunner for the original In Treatment. You can read the responses to his tweet on Twitter by clicking the embedded tweet above.

And almost everyone says: Give me Gabriel Byrne or go home.

So, once again, we must take up a “wait-and-see” attitude and keep ourselves open to this new development as it blossoms.

Who would YOU like to see in a new In Treatment?

What kinds of patients would interest you? And the format?

This would be an HBO series, probably, so no binge-ing at first, because they would not drop the entire series all at once. But HBO was surprisingly willing to experiment with the format for this series the first time around, so who knows what they might entertain now. What would YOU like to see?

Me? Oh, you know me. Give me Gabriel or give me… well. I’d probably watch this no matter what, but I wouldn’t necessarily be HAPPY about it. wink

THIS would make us all happy, I’m sure.

P. S. In Treatment, Seasons 1 – 3, is currently streaming via HBO. Watch it now! You’ll feel better. heart

I would love a 4th season and with Gabriel Byrne only!
    He is Paul.
I’d love to see Laura back and a real romance between them

  2. I loved the series with Gabriel Byrne and the original writers and directors. It’s gold. No need to reboot. Just watch the original. It’s perfect. It holds up, even after repeated viewings.
But if Gabriel Byrne et al do return for a fourth season, sign me up.

I don’t think I will ever have the heart to watch In Treatment without Gabriel Byrne… Paul Weston was the heart, soul and everything of the show and Gabriel WAS Paul. At times it became really difficult to draw the line there. Maybe if they make the show around Adele this time… With Paul as an occasional patient, I might give it a chance.

In the same way, like Angele … I LOVED In TREATMENT, with our Gabriel Byrne … I think that all of us miss this series so much. It moves us so, each season. IT will be wonderful, the 4th season with him. All us will be so happy for it, certainly. Thanks for this news, Stella.

  4. That would be great! Especially now with people stuck indoors.

  5. It would be great with a new season with In Treatment, but we need to have Gabriel Byrne in it!
He IS In Treatment. I think no actor can listen like he can.
So I hope for more Paul Weston!

    • Nora, wouldn’t it be amazing!? Gabriel’s Paul is what got this website started, so it would be great to see him return to our screens once again, wouldn’t it?

I have no idea if Gabriel as Paul will happen, and I rather think it will not, but the thought makes the day brighter, and I’ll watch whatever they come up with, at least a few episodes, anyway. ;-)

  6. Just finished the show and desparately seeking closure. This is wonderful news, totally agree-Paul must return!

  7. It’s been announced that Uzo Aduba has been cast as the therapist in the In Treatment reboot, and I have to say I am totally intrigued. She is a phenomenal actor and I wish her all the best in this more inclusive reboot. I’d like to think that Mr. Byrne has relinquished his chair (forgive the pun) , as an ally fostering intersectionality and empowerment in this new decade of a global anti-racist movement. It has been 12 years since the first season of In Treatment. It will be fascinating to see how the writers capture our incredible times.

    • I’m working on a posting about this new development. She’s fantastic. This could be really good–and just what we need during the time of the pandemic, the election, the social justice movement–just what we need. <3

  8. Verónica

I’m really sorry for this wonderful actress you mention and whom I don’t know, but no way I would watch In Treatment without Gabriel. Here in Argentina they made something like In Treatment. I didn’t watch it. I know Gabriel said he never would do some series like that again, because it was exhausting for him, but, at least for me, there is no In Treatment without him. I agree with Nora: In Treatment IS Gabriel.

    • Yes, I’m sad that Gabriel is probably not going to be part of this reboot of his brilliant series, but I’m still intrigued by the possibilities of it. I will watch some episodes, no doubt. Will this new version catch fire like the original? We must, as you hate to hear, Verónica, WAIT AND SEE! <3

  9. Verónica

I’ve read some Fans who are playing with the thought of Gabriel making some character like Gina was or being a “patient” this time. It would be interesting, no doubts, but NEVER will be the same and I doubt this new series will catch fire , as you say, but everything may happen anyways.
I really don’t know what would happen if Gabriel would be part of the show. Will people use to see him not as the therapist? Will they not do all the time make comparisons with the original?
    Ok,ok WAIT…
    <3

  10. Not looking if Byrne does not return one way or the other!

  11. Mary Rooney

I won’t watch the show without Gabriel Byrne.

  12. Paul is amazing. I love Gabriel Byrne. But also everyone is forgetting about Gina. She made the show too!
