Gabriel Byrne seems to have a hankering for rural American spaces. He’s made Maine his home, and recently filmed Hereditary in Oregon.

And now he’s headed out to Big Sky Country: Montana, the land of glacier lakes, bear-filled forests, and the biggest, bluest sky you could ever imagine!

Deadline, as always, has the news:

It Chapter Two and Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments star Isaiah Mustafa, Golden Globe winner Gabriel Byrne (In Treatment) and three-time Golden Globe nominee Thomas Jane (Hung) are to lead western thriller Murder At Emigrant Gulch, we have learned.

Set in 1882, the film will follow a former slave (Mustafa) who arrives in Emigrant Gulch, Montana, a desolate former boomtown now on the decline, looking for a place to call home. On that same day, a local prospector discovers gold – and is murdered. The sheriff (Byrne) arrests the town newcomer. But as the mystery of the prospector’s murder deepens, and the town’s earnest preacher (Jane) questions the accused man’s guilt, a clash between faith and the law threatens to tear the town apart.

The movie is due to shoot in Montana in May, we hear. Richard Gray (Robert The Bruce) will direct Eric Belgau’s script. . . Exec producers are Courtney Lauren Penn and Thomas Jane for Renegade Entertainment, and Carter Boehm.

Mustafa is coming off box office smash It Chapter Two and Freeform series Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments. The Usual Suspects star Byrne recently starred in Amazon’s Euro crime-thriller series ZeroZeroZero. The Predator actor Jane recently starred in sci-fi series The Expanse and is in post-production on western The Last Son with Sam Worthington and Machine Gun Kelly.

I am a big fan of Thomas Jane. His recent work on the Amazon series The Expanse was stellar! wink

And, as it happens, Emigrant, Montana is a real place. It is tiny (pop. 372), but soon to be bustling with activity of the movie-making kind. A bit of history:

The Montana Film Office is working hard to bring more projects to their state. The very popular series Yellowstone, with Kevin Costner, has been filming there for several years. The state is making it quite attractive for film producers to shoot there. Tax breaks for independent filmmakers are okay with me, especially as projects get new life after the pandemic.

Yellowstone Film Ranch has made a lot of progress on their building project. Here are some images from their website to whet your appetite:

As noted, filming is scheduled to begin in May. Stay tuned for more details as they happen! heart

  1. This sounds like a movie I will like very much!

    Thank you for sharing.

    • I love these sets. Filming in Montana will be so much fun. And this story sounds intriguing.

Gabriel’s birthday is in May, so I hope someone there remembers! <3

  2. I saw an expected release date on IMDB. Can we hope this will be on our screens in December??? That would a nice holiday present!!

    • No, I don’t see how. This film has been on the radar for almost 3 years. It got pushed back for many different reasons, apparently. Filming in May would make it hard to be ready in December. However, IF this turns out to be a Netflix film (this director and production company did Robert the Bruce for them recently), then maybe! We shall see. <3

  3. Gabriel Byrne rides into the wild west once again. This I must see!

  4. Looks very interesting. Maybe he could check out Vital Ground. Bart the bear and friends are located in Montana. Bart was in the movie The Edge with Sir Anthony Hopkins. Seems if you’re in Montana you need to see bears!

  5. DORA BARALIA

Montana looks like a very special place. Another western for our dear GABRIEL. I can’t see some of his others, but I will wait to be able to see this here too. If this film is by NETFLIX I can see it like LOST GIRLS–EXCELLENT film. Dear Stella, we never forget the birthday of Gabriel. Mine is in a few days. Thanks for this special present. These pages are the best present for me. All my feelings for all of YOU.
